Nick's closed it's doors for the last time in the summer of 2011. This blog was pulled offline for most of our last year, but in the interest of the historical record, it's back live for a while. As the new calendar year approaches it's hard not to get a little wistful, and that's how I ended up looking over the comment cards from our last couple of years....

Our Facebook page is still active and we'll occasionally post updates there, especially when we are serving pizza at a local festival or are otherwise back in action around town. We'd love to hear from you there!

Changes at Nick's

It's true, this news blog has been neglected in the wake of Facebook and we apologize for that!

Most important news right now is that Micheal and Nicole's baby will arrive any day now, and Nicole is no longer taking care of the "front of the house." Kim has come in off the roads and will be handling Carry Out and Dine In. There will be no delivery service until further notice. Come in and SEE us!

Nick's does not typically issue coupons, as we strive to give you the very best value we can on a daily basis. That being said, we do have few deals floating around out there:

The Frequent Pie-er Club remains in effect, which gets you a free topping on your large pizza ($1.75 savings). If you choose one of our Signature Pizzas, you get even more savings because those pizzas are already priced less than a Custom Pizza with the same number of toppings.

Check your email box for our most recent email newsletter for a family dinner special, and keep in mind that our "All American Pizzas" are all currently available at special reduced pricing.

Cost Cutting at Nick's

We're trying hard to avoid raising the cost of your Nick's experience.

We'll be keeping a very close eye on even the smallest expenses, and will try to do so with the least possible effect on you. You can be assured that we will not sacrifice the quality and tastiness you've come to expect from us.

There are a few things you may notice, however....

We're reducing our use of plastic bags and other convenience packaging.
We'll 'combine' items whenever practical. For example, if you order two sets of Brownie bites they will be boxed together for take out. Please let us know if you need something packaged separately.
After our current stock of pizza boxes is depleted we'll temporarily switch to a more affordable box. Your food will still be hot and tasty, the box just won't be quite as familiar. We'll likely make an immediate switch-off to the simple boxes for dining room take-home leftovers.
The dining area will remain cool (but still cozy) all winter. We will have a space heater available for anyone particularly sensitive to temperature, and hot coffee and cocoa to warm you up. And of course, if you bring lots of extra people to dine with you, all that body heat will keep you very toasty!

We know times are hard all around and we truly appreciate the support of customers who continue to spend precious dollars with us. On behalf of our staff and ourselves, Thank You for Choosing Nick's.

Santa Comes to Nick's This Week!

Santa will be at Nick's on Thursday, December 3 from 6 pm to around 8:30 pm. This will be a casual arrangement with no lines or formal "sittings." There is no charge for your children to visit with him and you are welcome to take photographs.

This weekend, October 17 and 18, look for the Nick's Mobile Pizza Oven in booth #1 at the Hogansville Hummingbird Festival . All day Saturday and Sunday we'll be serving up cheese, pepperoni and cinnamon pizza slices. (Whole pizzas also available - we'll just need a little time to prepare them for you!)

Saturday night the 17th, we will be back in Grantville for the opening of Grantville's Little Haunted House next door to Nick's. Nick's will likely open a little later than usual on Saturday night after the festival, but as soon as we are up and running we will have delivery, dine-in and carry out service as usual.

Beginning next week, we'll be offering some of your favorite Nick's treats (like yummy fried brownies!) at our haunted concessions booth outside so Haunted House fans can get some munchies while you wait to be terrified!

Most nights between the 17th and 31st, you will also have opportunities for professional Halloween photographs at Nick's. You can wear a costume or simply pose with some of our spookified visitors!

Mark your calendars for Family-friendly Trick-or-Treat at Grantville's Little Haunted House on October 31 between 4:00 and 5:30, and Trunk-or-Treat at Grantville First Baptist Church just "across the way" from Nick's.

A note for those of you coming to Nick's and/or the Haunted House: The area in front of and adjacent to Nick's will be reserved parking for Nick's guests. Please take note of signage directing you to parking for the Haunted House. If the lot is full, you can park at the Colley Street ballfields just a short walk away. Please do not park at Dollar General and do not block Nick's or any other Grantville business that is open after 7 pm.

Reviews are beginning to roll in on "The Fun Guy," our special signature pizza for September (National Mushroom Month) and the verdict is a resounding YUMMY!

Fun Guy Pizza: Olive oil base with white and Crimini mushrooms, plus goat cheese, garlic and fresh herbs. Drizzled with olive oil after baking for that extra bit of flavor.

You can also request Crimini mushrooms and/or Goat Cheese as a topping on any Custom Pizza, or try them as an addition to your Stromboli, Calzone, Salad or even Pasta!

"The Big Feed" for Families in Need

Nick's Pizzeria has announced plans for The Big Feed and invites other local businesses to participate and benefit local food pantries.

Local restaurants are invited to help by procuring bulk pantry items typically available at large unit pricing not available to household consumers. Suggested items include 50 pound sacks of rice, flour, sugar, beans, and oatmeal; any similarly packaged staples will be welcomed.

To help stem the trend towards animal abandonment in these tough economic times, family pets will be remembered as well. Mac's Feed & Farm Supply is providing a supply of dog food and challenges other feed stores and animal-related businesses to provide other pet food and supplies.

Any business may participate in The Big Feed by donating items obtained through their own supplier, or by making a financial donation for items to be purchased by Nicks or Mac's. Donated items and cash donations are needed by September 30.

On Saturday, October 3, families, church groups, business organizations and individual volunteers will be hosted at Nick's for a day of measuring, packaging and labeling individual and family-sized portions for delivery to community food banks. All food will be handled in accordance with Health & Safety standards and cooking instructions will be provided.

For the convenience of sponsors and volunteers, canned items and toiletries will also be accepted on behalf of local service agencies. Nick's will continue to serve as a drop point for food pantry donations through the end of the year.

2009-10 School / Youth Sponsorships

Glanton Elementary: Our kids' pizza is named "Gator Pie" in honor of the Glanton Gators, and for each Gator Pie sold, we donate twenty-five cents to the school library book fund.
Moreland Elementary PTO: This partnership was not included in our print news because the details are still being worked out. However, we can confirm Nick's Pizzeria will be among the meal choices offered at the PTO Fall Festival on October 23.
Callaway High Cavaliers Football Team: Look for the Nick's Pizzeria offer on the Savings Cards being sold by the Cavalier Booster Club.
Heritage Christian School: A different Nick's offer appears on the Heritage School savings card.
Georgia Youth Science & Technology Center: Details have yet to be nailed down, but we'll be working with GYSTC on a children's science fair and/or other events to stimulate student interest in the sciences.
Grantville Little League: Nick's is offering a special pizza meal deal to Little League teams this fall and we're working on an expanded sponsorship role for the spring season.

Nick's September/October Calendar is online.

Notable events include "double punch" nights for Frequent Pie-ers, Grantville Day Festival lunch service (September 26); the Big Feed service project on October 3 and the FERST Lewis Grizzard & Catfish Memorial Bike Ride for Literacy on October 4.

Looking for fun stuff to do this fall? How 'bout a little soul-feeding community service? You'd be surprised at how much FUN service can be!

Help us with The Big Feed service project for local food banks on October 3. We need volunteers of all ages to help with bagging & labeling items for food pantries. Financial and "in kind" sponsors can help increase the volume of food donated.

On October 4, join us as we enjoy the annual fall color show...not the turning of the leaves, but the arrival of fluorescent spandex-clad cyclists participating in the FERST Bikeride for Literacy. Rest Stop #1 will be hosted by volunteers outside Nick's Pizzeria.

Adults and older teens can get their Scare on at Grantville's Little Haunted House. Nick's is providing sponsorship in the form of a location, but the creative genius and organizer behind the thrills & chills is local resident Andy Emmitt. If you'd like to volunteer your help with "set design," throughout the next several weeks, and/or want to be an actor or behind-the-scenes participant in the spookhouse in late October, please contact Andy directly.

Chef Nick's alter-ego, Grantville City Councilman Nick Sasso, welcomes "campaign workers" able to help with managing paperwork and/or hitting the streets on behalf of the re-elect Nick Sasso campaign. Local registered voters are desirable, but anyone interested in supporting his campaign can volunteer.

The annual Hummingbird Festival is not to be missed! October 17 & 18 in downtown Hogansville. Nick's Pizzeria will be on the food court in booth #1. For information about vending or volunteering, contact Mary.

Good Eats in San Francisco

I suspect we don't have a whole lotta readers in sunny California, but we do try to give credit where credit is due when it comes to good eats. So.....

If you happen to find yourself in Modesto and need a good 'dress up place' where you don't have to actually dress up,' we recommend Galletto Ristorante. Now, its true that they do in fact have moderate "dress up" prices, but the food is well worth it and the service is exceptional. Galletto is owned by the Gallo wine people, so it isn't exactly mom-and-pop, but it still counts as independently owned in my book!

Down at Fisherman's Wharf on the San Francisco Bay, we heartily endorse Nick's Lighthouse. Okay, we DID choose it solely because of the name - it is one of many seafood joints on the wharf. They all offer the same spectacle of streetside sales (and piles and piles of crabs still moving their claws around...eww, sea spiders!!!) And they probably all offer similar dishes at their sit-down restaurants...but Nick's is worth the visit just so you can marvel over how they prepare so much good food, so fast, despite the fact that they have a galley kitchen approximately the size of an SUV. Besides, how can you place up a joint with such a great name?

....You didn't actually expect us to go without pizza for three days, did you? We were, after all, hanging out with Chef Nick's Canadian Counterpart, Daddio. We visited Extreme Pizza in Modesto and we all agreed it was very good pizza (not as good as Nick's or Daddio's, but to be fair it is a different style than either of us serve.) With franchises in several states and even one in Ireland, they come dangerously close to being a chain, but if you are ever faced with a choice between Extreme Pizza and Enormous Corporate Giant Pizza, don't hesitate to choose the former!

I grew up listening to Tom Shane's radio ads about going direct to Belgium to ensure the quality of his diamonds. This past weekend, we had ourselves some Shane-style action with a trip to Modesto, California, home of Stanislaus Food Products.

Chef Nick got an up close and personal look at their farms and factory operations. It was gratifying to learn that the Stanislaus company goes even beyond what we expected when it comes to ensuring our house-made sauces begin with the very best possible tomato products available.

While Nick was in tomato country, I made my way to the nut zone (which is rather fitting, don't you think?) The yummy almonds I sampled were all from Blue Diamond co-op growers. So I did, in effect, go straight to the source for some diamonds this weekend! The historical displays at Nick's are always a hit with customers, and it's time we shake things with something different! Can you help?? We're putting together a "Back to School" exhibit of photographs and artifacts relating to school days.

We've got a fair amount of stuff from "old" Grantville but we want to celebrate more recent history, too.

Whether or not you attended school in Grantville or nearby (but ESPECIALLY if you did,) we invite you to bring in one or two old photographs - your annual school photo, class picture, club photo - or any other school memorabilia (yearbooks, ballgame or theater programs, uniforms, even grade reports!). Just think how much fun it will be to see if your neighbors recognize you in your horn-rimmed glasses or bell bottoms!

For each item you bring for exhibit, we'll enter your name into a prize drawing. Prizes will range from free pizza toppings to free food and items from other local businesses. EVERY entry wins!

We'll be collecting and exhibiting items through the end of August. All original items will returned - we can scan copies here at Nick's if you don't want to let go of the originals for even a little while!

One wall of our restaurant is papered with menus from other independent pizzerias around the world. So far, in addition to several US states, we've got menus from Australia, Thailand, and Antigua. It's our way of celebrating fellowship with independent pizzeria owners everywhere,

Each month, the customer bringing us the menu from the farthest away (of those collected that month) wins a free large cheese pizza!

We know the current economy has driven just about all of us to couponing. And marketers are sure turning to it as well....every day we get something from BJs, or Office Max, or Ingles and lots of other shops in my mailbox. Some of them we use, but many of them are for products or places we don't need.

On the theory that this is true for others, we are setting out a Coupon Exchange bin in our lobby. You can drop in coupons you don't need, and take any that are useful to you. And yes, that includes the recent Nick's Spaghetti "coupon" (if you don't like spaghetti it is still nice to know that you at least noticed you got mail from us!)

Remember, we also have a business referral area in the pizzeria. We encourage our customers to "shop local" and buy products & services from each other whenever possible. Every card is from some one we've actually served - we don't let random strangers simply drop off cards, and in many cases we ourselves have done business with the person in question. As independent restaurateurs we've always had a "we're in this together" approach when it comes to other local restaurants. Every successful independent restaurant represents proof that consumers value the unique dining experience that sets "locals" apart from the big chains.

We are blessed with neighboring business owners who share our philosophy. They've even extended a hand to help us now and again. Last fall, Ted Williams of Hawg Heaven graciously loaned us his monster ice bin for use at the Hummingbird Festival; Paul Parker of County Line Cafe furnished the trailer used to ferry our pizza oven the Golf Classic this month.

Most recently, Toni Striblin of Rogers Barbecue personally jumped in to help us pretty-up our storefront. Knowing I myself have a 'black thumb' when it comes to gardening, Toni and our mutual friend Phyllis Pettway potted cheery flowers in front of Nick's. Toni was also instrumental in introducing the Callaway High School athletic department to Nick's, and we had the distinct pleasure of feeding the Cavaliers last weekend.

We are proud to be part of an industry that fosters cooperative relationships and distinctly friendly "competition." We certainly want you to choose Nick's often, but on those occasions when you don't, we hope you will support you other "locals."

Chef Nick set up shop - literally...we set up a mobile pizzeria - at hole six at White Oak Golf Club for the Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce 2009 Golf Classic on May 6. (Yes, that is a real pizza oven you see there on the golf course!)

Many thanks to Nick's team members Micheal & Nicole Cronic, Scott Palmer, and Phyllis Pettway for doing an exceptional job recreating Nick's trademark pizzas and hospitality.

Nick's won first prize in the Expo...on the heels of our second-place finish last year, we are wondering how we'll out do ourselves next year! Several golfers have already come down to see us in Grantville and confirm Nick's Pizza is worth the drive. ("golf"..."drive"....clever, huh?)

It's time for the annual Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce Golf Tournament and for the second year in a row, Nick's is sponsoring a "hole" at the event. Last year we won second place in the Sponsors' competition - we set up a medieval encampment and spit-roasted pork and lamb for the golfers!

This year we're taking a more traditional italiano ristorante approach, but details are Top-Secret until, well - at least until the night before, when we are scrambling around trying to pull it all together!

We hope you will excuse the inconvenience of our one-night closing and make plans to enjoy Nick's on Tuesday, Thursday or the weekend!

City Employee Appreciation Lunch

Every year since we opened, we've had the honor of treating our City of Grantville employees to lunch. As residents and business owners, we rely on them quite a bit, and this is our opportunity to get to know some of the folks who work to make our city a wonderful place to live and work.

I wanted to catch some pictures of them with our pizzas on the table... but as it turns out, city work makes people very hungry. The pizza pretty much disappeared before I had a chance to get my camera!

Spring fever has Grantville in its grip! Here at Nick's we recommend some refreshing cold beverages and tasty pizza to welcome the long-awaited weekend.

We have it on good authority that a nice Newcastle Brown Ale pairs nicely with the King Kamehaha, our "extreme Hawaiian" pizza with ham, bacon,Canadian bacon, pineapple and a drizzle of Teriyaki. (Sounds weird but the taste is spectacular!)

If your taste runs towards the hot or spicy, try the Mexican Hat Dance (beef, onion, bell pepper, seasonings) or Fajita Pizza (grilled chicken, onion, bell pepper) - both with our creamy spicy Fajita sauce - enjoyed with ice cold Terrapin Rye Pale Ale. This is Terrapin's newest offering, a hoppy beer made with rye malt that also provides a great complement to Nick's Caribbean Spice Jerk wings.

Terrapin's Golden Ale is a terrific match for the A&WP (artichoke and white pizza.) Those Grantville favorites, the Meatlover and Meatlover McGee are extra tasty topped off with the touch of honey inTerrapin Sunray Wheat Beer.

Of course, nothing beats Peroni or Moretti for true Italian flavor when it comes to great beer with stromboli, calzone, pizza or pasta....On the other hand, it hardly gets more "all-American" than a big ol' pile of hot wings and a brew from Budwieser or Miller!

The fifth annual City of Grantville Employee Appreciation Lunch at Nick's is Friday, April 24. Nick's hosts this luncheon annually as a gesture of thanks for the work they do to keep our city going!

Residents are encouraged to drop in at Nick's between noon and 1:00 to meet some of the workers and personally express your own appreciation and support. If you can't make the lunch, next time you see a guy in a blue shirt cutting grass or up on a utility pole...take a moment to say hello!!

Delivery Service Resumes (Mostly)

It can be a real challenge to find folks with the right charm to represent us at your doorstep, especially since they also need to have the right schedule, a good car, quick math skills and courage in the face of big dogs. Then there is the financial reality of insurance and other delivery-specific costs, and the practical challenge of making it all work in tandem with our growing dine-in and carry-out services.

We recently announced a switch to "Friday only" delivery, and folks have come out of the woodwork with offers to help us keep the pizzas moving in Grantville.

So here's the deal....
Thanks to the return of Taylor (everyone's favorite 'hippy chick' delivery driver) Nick's announces the return of Friday and Saturday delivery.

During the week, we'll be blessed with driving help from Phyllis & PJ Pettway, along with longtime always-here-when-we-need-a-hand volunteer Slice Girl, Amanda Foiles. (Don't be surprised if our winter helper-outs Deanna and Eric Irvin show up once in a while as well - give Eric a Mexican Hat Dance pizza and he'll drive just about anywhere.)

I've also got a list of about five other local folks who've offered to help whenever they can. If schedules work out as we hope, we'll have full delivery service every hour of every weekday...but we still encourage you to come and dine in at Nick's, where Nicole is here five nights a week to cater to your every pizza lovin' need!

Sometimes I think it would be nice to have a "grown up" restaurant with lots of full time employees and all that jazz. But I must confess, there is something especially rewarding about having a place where the customers clamor to step in and be part of the action, and care enough to sacrifice a night or two a week just to drive around "spreading the love and sharing the pizza."

Hooray! Little League is back in Grantville and this Saturday is Opening Day at our brand new ball fields around the corner from Nick's!

Nick's will be open for lunch this Saturday, March 21st, from 11:00 to 1:00 pm . We'll be serving our famous pizza, hot sandwiches, salads, calzones, stromboli, desserts, and ice cold tea, soft drinks and beer.

We'll take our last order around 12:45 (we gotta get out at 1 so we can catch at least one of the games!) and then we'll be back at 5:00 for full dinner service as usual.

Weekday Delivery Suspended

Due to rising insurance costs and other factors uniquely affecting delivery services, Nick's is suspending home delivery on weeknights and Saturdays for the immediate future. Delivery is available on Friday nights only, within the usual delivery areas, a minimum order of $15 and a $1.50.

The bright side for regular delivery customers is that Carry-Out does not have a surcharge and can be applied to Frequent Pie-er credit towards free pizzas. When you collect your carry out order, be sure to ask for a Frequent Pie-er card if you don't already have one.

We are looking at solutions to current challenges and hope to resume regular delivery services in the near future. We appreciate your patience and hope you'll use this as an excuse to come in and enjoy a fun dinner right here at Nick's. We have full table service, cold beer, and crayons and games to entertain the kids (and kids at heart) while dinner is prepared!

Free Kitties Need Love

We have some stray kittens out back of our shop that need homes. At the moment they appear clean and healthy, and fairly social with people.

One of them is especially social and keeps trying to get inside the shop when we are not looking. We can't take any chances, so we need to get rid of them before they successfully find a way in.

I'd rather not call animal control so I thought I'd put the word out here. I own a cat that started out as a 'stray' and it is very rewarding to know I saved her from a lousey life (or painful death on the road.) I hope some of you are looking for a little love! (The mobile vet that visits Newnan every week is very reasonably priced.)

We can only give it a day or two so if you are interested please contact me right away.

A belated Congratulations to Elizabeth Ford, the very first Frequent Pie-Er to get a free pizza from Nick's! Liz has a 'thing' for Nick's pizza, so she's already well on her way to getting another freebie!

Jason Lassetter was just a day behind Liz, and he was already 'famous' in Nick's circles. Jason was the very first customer to spend more than twenty bucks during the early days of Nick's Pizza Stop, and since then the Lassetter family has gone down in the annals of Nick's history as perhaps the single largest consumer of Nick's hot sandwiches. Until Jason 'earned' his free pie he had not eaten a Nick's pizza in years, if at all!

Wow! If you were a pizza-eater the last couple of weekends, you know that there are some days when Nick’s needs more hands. As the weather warms up, we’ll get even busier.

We’ve been fortunate to have lots of friends and customers help us out along the way, but we’re definitely at the point where we need experienced casual-dining professionals who can jump from table service to telephones to cashiering, with prepwork, bussing and dishwashing often thrown into the mix.

These positions are part time, include weekends and some holidays, and require a high school diploma. Print an application or pick one up in our lobby. We’ll accept applications during weekday business hours; daytime interviews will be scheduled (no walk-up interviews, and no telephone inquiries, please!) Incomplete applications will not be considered – complete reference information is required.

We've Gone Hi-Tech

Okay, so maybe not high-tech but it is a step in that direction. Nick's is currently phasing-in use of a computerized system for order processing.

The good news is that the computer system will ensure consistent pricing and generally improve our speed and accuracy even on the busiest of nights. The bad news is that it will take a little time for all the data to be entered, and the ordering routine may initially take just a teeny bit longer before it gets shorter.

One thing we promise the new system won't do is turn you into a number or faceless stranger. While it would technically be faster for us to just rely on phone numbers to identify callers and order numbers to distribute food items, that is not what Nick's is all about!

We will continue to make every effort to learn our customer's names - and use them. Our cooks will still entertain each other with bets as to who is first to recognize a customer, and get their usual order started even before the ticket arrives in the kitchen. Friendly hospitality is still our goal. We'll often use our newly discovered 'extra time' to chat with you, rather than pushing you through the order process like we're running relay races. (Of course, there will still be nights like last weekend, when we are so busy we can hardly breath, much less chat....we are hoping that the 'new system' will temper the chaos of those nights somewhat!)

We appreciate your patience as we make this transition. You can help by completing the "Nick's News/Nick's Notes" cards in our dining room, providing us with complete address information even if you are a delivery customer. We also appreciate your letting us know if you have people with different last names living in your household, and if you are giving us a call-back number that is not actually a landline at your home address.

While you have the Nick's card in hand, please take a moment to give us some straight forward feedback on the "Comment" side of the card. Your input is an essential factor in our ability to keep making your visits to Nick's are satisfying.

Discovery in Lawrenceville - BiBa's Restaurant

Anytime we leave Grantville, we inevitably end up seeking out other independent pizzerias and Italian restaurants. We made a terrific discovery this weekend - BiBa's Pizzeria & Restaurant on Sugarloaf Parkway in Lawrenceville.

We didn't check out their pizza, but the pasta dishes we tried were all outstanding. The service was particularly good - wish I could remember name of our waiter (a former LaGrange College student...small world, huh?)

If you find yourself up on the northside, we highly recommend BiBa's. According to their website, they are in Gainesville and Cumming, too - with a Tennessee location coming soon.

Love to see that Independent spirit going strong!

Place party orders (over $50) TONIGHT for Scheduled Delivery on New Year's Eve. Delivery can be scheduled for between 5 and 8:30.

On New Year's Eve we'll seat dine-in guests until 7:30 and accept carry-out orders until 7:50 pm (no delivery for orders placed tomorrow).

If you are hosting a New Year's Eve gathering on Wednesday and want wings, pizza or subs delivered, you MUST place and pay for your your order before closing on Tuesday. We will be open on New Year's Eve until 8 pm for carry-out and dine-in only. Delivery will be available for pre-paid party orders on New Years Eve.

Nick's is closed New Year's Day with regular dinner hours resuming on Friday, January 2 (Friday lunch service returns on January 9.)

Parade The Family Into Nick's This Weekend

The Annual Calico Christmas Parade will head down LaGrange Street from City Hall at 3 pm on Saturday, December 13. The parade should pass by Nick's around 3:15.

Shortly thereafter, Smokey Road Middle School Chorus will perform a holiday concert in the parking lot of the Nick's/Shaye's/New Image parking lot.

The Nick's dining room will open after the concert. You can pre-order large party dine-in orders as soon as the Nick's team is back in the shop after the parade. Until 5 pm, only walk-up and dine-in orders will be accepted; telephone lines will open at our usual time of 5 pm for delivery and pick-up orders.

* Customers of Nick's, Shaye's and New Image (and Smokey Road parents) can park in the rear of our shopping center at the corner of LaGrange and Colley Street. Public parking is available near the freight depot and along Main and Griffin Streets downtown. When choosing your parking site for the parade and concert, please be considerate of downtown shops open for business.

Been thinking about trying our Baklava - the delicious greek pastry with nuts and honey - but yet to take the plunge? Or maybe you're one of our several "Baklava freaks" who can't get enough of that gooey goodness? This week we've got a special for you!

Order any large pizza and add three servings of Baklava for 5 bucks! Additional portions are available for only $2. (Regular Price is $2.75) This special is valid through Saturday, December 13.

If you are planning for holiday guests or got assigned "desserts" for a holiday party, order a full tray of Baklava - that's 18 servings - for $35. (Cut each portion in half for an excellant party tray mini-treat!)

The full-tray special is valid through the end of December and applies with or without an additional purchase. We only keep a tray or two on hand, so give us a few days if you need to order several party servings.

Holiday Hours at Nick's

Nick's will open early on Saturday, December 13, following the Annual Calico Christmas Parade (brought to you this year courtesy of volunteer coordinator Megan Birchfield.) The parade will leave City Hall at 3 pm, running down LaGrange Street to the tennis courts and ending at Grantville Mill.

The Smokey Road Middle School Chorus will present a holiday concert at the corner of LaGrange and Colley Street immediately following the parade. The Nick's dining room will open immediately following the concert, if not before. We'll accept carry-out orders at the counter and welcome dine-in guests. At 5 pm we'll also begin accepting telephone orders. We'll be open as usual until 10:00 pm with the last delivery order accepted at 9:30.

We're still debating what to do about holiday hours the weeks of Christmas and New Years. We want to give the staff some time to enjoy the holidays. But every year we hear from folks who want to bring visiting relatives to Nick's only to be disappointed that we are closed for a holiday break. If you are planning to "share the pizza love" this holiday season, please give us a call sooner rather than later, and we'll try to set a schedule that makes us all happy!

Just a thank-you to Santa for visiting Nick's on December 13. The photo at left (of Nick's mascot Lane Foiles) is a bit murky due to problems with my scanner...the pics provided on site were much better!

Based on comments from parents it seems photographer Callie Williams was a hit and we'll probably ask Santa to bring her back with him next year.

Our dining room lobby is still very Christmas-fied and diners are welcome to bring in their cameras for their own family photo in front of our trees!

I am thinking of spending the morning of the Christmas Parade (Saturday, December 13) down at Nick's, working on Christmas Crafty things and handmade gifts. I am wondering if there are any folks out there who might be interested in coming down and doing some scrapbooking, card making, cookie decorating and other crafting with me. Kinda what my old friends in the SCA used to call a "Project Day" where everyone works on their own stuff, but enjoys good company (and maybe wine or cookies or both) . Nick's won't be open for business until after the parade (which is at 3 pm) so we could get a good long day of crafting in! If you are interested, please drop me a note!

HouseGuests This Week?

We all know what you'll be feeding visiting family and friends on Thursday, but what about before and after the big day?

So many of you folks have bemoaned our absence during Thanksgiving week of year's past, we're cutting our own holiday short (sniff, sniff) and making our poor, downtrodden employees come to work (bwaaaaahhhh!) while everyone else is all cozy at home watching It's A Wonderful Life with the cousins.

But we're hoping this means we'll have an opportunity to personally wish you a Happy Thanksgiving. Considering that, to great extent, you guys ARE our family, we would very much enjoy having some of you come visit with us this week!

Got things to do? Bring your glue guns and scrapbooks and get to creating right here in our dining room! Need to mail out Christmas cards? I'll loan you my special Green-Ink pen! Heck, we don't even care if you bring in laundry to fold! That's the beauty of a hometown pizzeria ...someone here will probably lend a hand with it. If you just want to relax, you can challenge uncle Bob to a game of Chess or another game from our collection; enjoy some hot coffee and crispy, gooey baklava while you read a good book! Revisit your childhood by coloring a picture for our holiday display!

With a little luck, you'll be in the dining room when we pass out samples of something yummy from the Nick's kitchen! And don't forget....Santa will be here on Saturday for pictures!

On the other hand, if you are stuck at home with a bunch of people to feed, consider this....This week only, get a free gallon of tea or 2-Liter soft drink with pick-up orders over $50; or if you live in our regular delivery area, let us waive the delivery fee instead.
And for our friends in the Outer Limits - so far as time constraints and business volume permits, this week we'll make deliveries outside the usual service area for orders over $50 (delivery fee applies, with a five-mile limit - and main roads only...we can't risk losing our drivers in the hinterlands!) Either way, we encourage you to tip your driver generously, since he or she will be working extra hard to try and keep up the pace!
